Semi-continuous Algae CultivationThe system was tested using three different harvesting rates with each rate being tested bothwith and without additional CO2 supply. The harvesting rates were one half of the PBRwater volume (600 L) every other day (1/4), one third (1/3) of the PBR water volume(400 L) daily, and half (¨ö) of the PBR water volume (600 L) daily. These rates were testedto determine the optimal operation parameters that yielded a maximum production of algalbiomass. The effect of additional CO2 was tested by adding CO2 (100%) to the mixing tankthrough a ceramic diffuser. Since the addition of CO2 affects the pH value of the system, theCO2 flow rate was controlled to keep the pH in the range of 7.0¡7.5. For each test, therunning time was ranged from 9 to 29 days. This range was corresponds to three times ofthe hydraulic retention time (HRT) of that test run. For example, the harvesting of one halfevery other day has a HRT of 4 days. Thus, the experiment length should be longer than12 days. Table 2 summarizes the experimental arrangements.
