The source in an OLAP system is the server that supplies the data to be analyzed.
Depending on the use of the OLAP product, the source could be an data warehouse, a
legacy database housing corporate data, a collection of spreadsheets that holds financial
data, or a combination of any of the above. The ability of an OLAP product to work with
data from a number of sources is very important. Requiring that all source data is stored
in a particular format or in a certain database is inconvenient for database administrators.
It also reduces the power and flexibility of the OLAP product. Administrators and users
find that OLAP products that allow data extraction from not only a wide variety of
sources, but multiple sources, are more flexible and useful than those that have greater
requirements.
