10.1. Case Study 1: Pensacola, FL (Monsanto)10.1.1. Injection-Facility OverviewMonsanto operates one of the world’s largest nylon plants on the Escambia River about 13 miles north of Pensacola, Florida. The construction, operations, and effects of the injection- well system at this site have been extensively documented by the US Geological Survey in cooperation with the Florida Bureau of Geology. Pressure and geochemical effects are reported by Goolsby (99). Additional microbiological data are reported by Elkan and Horvath (100). Major chemical processes observed at the site include neutralization, dissolution, biological denitrification, and methanogenesis. The geochemical fate of organic contaminants in the injected wastes, however, has not been reported.
