The masses, which occur at a given (equivalent) diameter d can be measured and displayed.
This is done in Figure 4.22 in a qualitative way with a logarithmic scale for the
d-axis. Notice the two peaks, one at a diameter of somewhat less than 1 [μm] and one
at a diameter of around 10 [μm]. The smaller particles pose the highest health risk, as
they penetrate deepest into the lungs. When they are chemically or biologically active, for
example when they contain sulfuric acid, they may do much local damage ([21], p. 116).
As the smallest particles are most dangerous, regulations define a quantity PM10. This is
