How plants take up air pollutants Plants exchange atmospheric gases in a similar manner to animals and humans, except that they do so in the opposite direction. They take up carbon dioxide and give off oxygen, and this is partially responsible for maintaining the oxygen atmosphere on Earth. This take up and release of gases occurs through stomata , the small pores on the lower surface of the leaf (Figure 27). The uptake of carbon dioxide and conversion to carbohydrates and energy is called photosynthesis.
