battery saving tips for your blackberry z10
Posted September 1, 2013
Disclosure: I am participating in the Verizon Savers Voices program and have been provided with a wireless device and six months of service in exchange for my honest opinions about the product. http://ad-for-verizon.com
I have been exploring the BlackBerry Z10 since mid-June. I have to say, there are a lot of mixed reactions on this phone. Many people are having minor hiccups, a lot of people are upset with the lack of apps available, some are saying that this phone should have been out years ago and BlackBerry was late to the game and some are even having battery issues. I am certainly no expert when it comes to any device, but I do tend to play around with them a little more then others might. I play with every. single. setting. I want to know what everything does. I want to know how everything works. I have features about my previous phone that I love and I am not ready to give them up. Finding features to mimic them are a little difficult, mostly because the BlackBerry World has the lack of apps. I do need to stick up for BlackBerry in this though because they truly are working on getting more and more apps into the market. The fact that in the first 30 days of launch they had 70,000 apps and within 30 days that jumoed up to 120,000 apps. That’s a HUGE growth. While the competitors have significantly more apps, I do not think that matters. Neither the Android or iOS platform have this much growth in 30 days. They just didn’t. I talked about sideloading apps in another post and I know many people found that to be useful and a good work around for the time being. I truly encourage people to check out the BlackBerry Support forums or the CrackBerry Z10 forum. There is so much information in both places; information that addresses the minor bugs and other things.
Today I decided to talk about the battery! The battery seems to be a burning desire for everyone. I have to admit, when I started using the BlackBerry Z10 I was getting 3-4 hours on my battery. I thought.. “People BUY this?” I couldn’t imagine how anyone would want to have a phone with a battery they had to keep charging. I don’t want to carry a charger with me when I leave the house (unless I am leaving for an extended trip). That got me thinking.. surely there HAS to be a way to conserve on battery power. And guess what, there is!! If you follow this step by step you will have a great phone with a battery that truly can keep up. I went from 3-4 hours a day to about 10-12+ hours a day. It’s amazing and now that I have the battery issue resolved, it seems that the phone is everything that I needed (and now love).
how do i make my blackberry z10 battery last longer?
The answer is simple. You need to adjust settings. I am going to go over the settings i changed, why I changed them and hopefully help you get on a road to a better battery life.
First, I want you to take your charger with you, turn your BlackBerry completely off. Plug the phone into the wall. You will see your LED flash yellow. This is drainging your battery down to zero. This is CRITICAL! It erases any memory the battery might have. When it’s done the light will turn green. I recommend doing this overnight as it did take me about 4-5 hours to complete and you cannot use the phone during this process. If after 6-8 hours your battery has not gone to green, you can manually unplug it and turn it on. You will see you have a full abttery at this point. This should also eliminate the “hot battery” some people were experiening.
Now it’s time to play and adjust the settings. This is the fun and SUPER easy part! It’s probably as critical as the first step though. These are settings that are taking that precious battery power and eating it up like it was a cookie! Ready?
Let’s walk through the first part of our menus: Settings
Scroll to Software Updates> Select Check For Updates > You should be running 10.1.0.2029.
Go to Network Connections > Select Mobile Network > Mobile Network & Data Services should be on. Data Services while roaming should be Prompt. Network Technology should be LTE/CDMA (fresh out of the box these are set as global. This strains the phone looking for different signals that you cannot even use unless you are in another country. Safe battery power unless you are headed to Paris, Europe, etc)
Wi-Fi > On (Some people will say that leaving the Wi-Fi off saves the battery, but for me the Wi-Fi hasn’t caused my battery ANY strain, neither has leaving the Wi-Fi off and keeping it on 4G/LTE. These don’t effect my battery either way, but feel free to experiment both ways.)
Bluetooth > Off (Unless this is something you are using every moment of the day, turn it on and off when you need and save on the battery.)
NFC > Off (Unless this is something you are using every moment of the day, turn it on and off when you need and save on the battery.)
Mobile Hotspot, Internet Tethering and VPN should all be off. Unless you need to use them all the time. Most people will not which is why it is ideal to turn them off when not in use.
Now let’s tackle those Notifications:
We are going to put it in Normal Mode > Sound On > I have the volume bar about 3/4 of the way up (to full volume) > Vibrate On > LED On
Under Notifications and Alerts I will break these down one at a time for easier reference:
Phone: All Alerts On > Sound On > Tone (Your Choice) > Vibrate Off (it doesn’t need to vibrate & ring this consumes twice the battery on ALL phones) > LED On
BBM Video: All Alerts On > Sound On > Tone (Your Choice) > Vibrate Off > LED Off
Email Messages: All Alerts On > Sound Off > Vibrate Off > LED On
BBM: All Alerts On > Sound On > Tone (Your Choice) > Vibrate 3 times (if you keep this off and put your phone on vibrate only it will not vibrate. I am not sure if this is a glitch or what, but this is what I have found.) > LED Off
Text Messages: All Alerts On > Sound On > Tone (Your Choice) > Vibrate 3 times > LED On
Reminders: All Alerts On > Sound On > Tone (Your Choice) > Vibrate Off > LED Off
Facebook: All Alerts Off (I don’t care to have my phone beep at every single Facebook notification. I can check in when I have the time or want, but the notifications STILL show up in the Hub, so you aren’t missing anything, just not having the phone alert everything.)
Twitter: All Alerts Off (I don’t care to have my phone beep at every single Twitter notification. I can check in when I have the time or want, but the notifications STILL show up in the Hub, so you aren’t missing anything, just not having the phone alert everything.)
LinkedIn: I personally do not use this so I have All Alerts Off
Foursquare: All Alerts Off (I don’t care to have my phone beep at every single Twitter notification. I can check in when I have the time or want, but the notifications STILL show up in the Hub, so you aren’t missing anything, just not having the phone alert everything.)
Other Applications: This is where you control other apps you have installed like eBay, Maps, WordPress, etc. If they aren’t things that you absolutely NEED a notification for, go in and turn them to All Alerts Off. You can still open the apps and see the updates, but some of them are not worth using the battery for alerts. You can judge that based on your individual use.
Let’s Look at the Main Volume:
Again I have min up about 3/4 of the way.
Volume Keys > Off
Always Adjust Media Volume > On
Moving on to those Accounts:
Email Accounts: Enter your information and get that set up. Keep in mind that at the very bottom you will see Sync Interval. I have mine set to 30 minutes. Some people prefer to know more often of new mail. For me, when I am home I am checking my mail after 30 minutes or so, that means I can do the same on my phone. And if you open up the app before that 30 minutes it will force a sync and grab your new mail that hasn’t been synced yet. You can stay up to date that way. If you aren’t big on checking emails, the longer that interval the more battery you save!
Facebook: I have mine set to only sync messages. You can set it to what you use or turn them all off.
Twitter: I have find friends, enable notifications and sync direct messages all off. I can log in to the app when I have time.
Oh that pretty display, but oh does it love your battery! Let’s work on that:
Font Size >8 (default)
Brightness > I have mine right between 1/4 of the way and 1/2 of the way. The brighter the screen the more battery juice. I haven’t had issue having a screen that is as bright as it gets!
Screen Lock > 30 Seconds (This is the time between you actually touching the screen or interacting with the phone before it goes to “sleep”, The shorter the time the quicker the display will time out if you get up to do something or get pulled away. I would never go higher then 1 minute.)
Allow Gestures When Locked > On (I have this on. Some people have reported the phone is “opening” in their pockets and therefor they turn this off. That means rather then swiping up and down to unlock, you’d hot the power button on top to light the screen and then slide up. Extra safety for those that want/need it).
Allow Power Button to Unlock Device > Off
HDMI Audio > On
Location, Location, Locations:
Location Services > On (Some people prefer this off. It does use a little bit of that battery to keep the location services on, but if you are using things like Maps, Foursquare or even BlackBerry Protect, you
