The effects of potassium fertilizer

The effects of potassium fertilizer (potassium sulfate) on Microcystis aeruginosa growth were examined in pond water without fish (first experiment) and with fish Oreochromis niloticus average size 2.51 + 0.26 (second experiment). Each experiment was conducted in 20 aquaria, four treatments (pond water supplemented with 1.5, 3, 4.5, 6 mM K2SO4 concentration) and control, four replicates. LC50 for Oreochromis niloticus was 10^6 cell/ml of Microcystis aeruginosa. The results showed that the average reduction in Microcystis aeruginosa growth in pond water supplemented with 1.5, 3, 4.5 and 6 mM K2SO4 concentration was 75.1, 84.6, 79.5 and 75.7% respectively, in the first experiment and was 46.8, 69.7, 61.5, 62.0%, respectively, in the second experiment. It could be concluded that, addition of potassium fertilizer (potassium sulfate) at concentration of 1.5 - 6 mM was suitable for inhibiting Microcystis aeruginosa growth in fish pond water, and safe for fish.
