This trend involving the increasing importance of political ideology in the Korean political process continued in the 17th National Assembly elections of 2004. The Uri Party was able beat the Grand National Party and became the majority party in the Assembly, thanks to massive support from progressive voters, who were angered by the attempt of the National Assembly (controlled by the Grand National Party at the time) to impeach President Roh Moo-hyun—the first time such an event occurred in Korean politics.
