IntroductionAcid sulfate soils are soils with a pHbelow 4 that is directly or indirectly causedby sulfuric acid formed by oxidation ofpyrite. Potential acid sulfate soils arepoorly drained soils with a high content ofpyrite. The pH of the soil will be neutral orslightly acid in the field. Upon drainage, the soil becomes strongly acidic, whichdirectly affects the growth of plants asa result of aluminum and iron toxicity, and indirectly decreases the availability ofphosphorus and other nutrients. Para orpseudo acid sulfate soils are soils in whichthe acid has been leached out or neutralizedto the extent that microbiological activationand root development are no longerhampered and which still show jarositemottles, high soluble sulfate and highpercentage of Al saturation of the clay
