Surface and deep learning

In education we talk about surface and deep learning. 'Surface' describes where you
might record key bits of information - names and dates of battles, for example; 'deep'

describes where you understand the significance of the events that occurred - 'this battle
was actually the turning point in the war and brought about...' or 'that bit of evidence
contradicts what I read in...'
