Hamel and Prahalad (1884, cited in Lynch and Cross 1995) have suggested five criteria for judging the appropriateness of a vision statement: foresight, breadth, uniqueness, consensus, and actionability.The leadership role in creating a compelling vision, translating it into action and sustaining it has been highlighted by many researchers (Bass, cited in Northouse 1997; Bennis and Nannus 1985, cited in Morden 1997; Cardona 2000). It is not enough for leaders to be able to develop a simultaneously inspiring and realistic vision, they need as well to be credible in communi- cating and implementing it.
