ABOUT THE TRANSLATION:
Over a decade ago a group of us began plans for the translation of Meiji no bunka. Some of the group-Stephen Vlastos (University ofIowa) and Carol Gluck (Columbia University)-- had come to know Professor Irokawa well during periods of research in Tokyo; others-Honald Morse (East Asia Program, Woodrow Wilson Center, Smithsonian Institution) and the editor--during Professor Irokawa's stay at Princeton in 1969-1970; and others-Eiji Yutani (East Asian Library, University
of California, Berkeley) and Noburu Hiraga (University of Washington)-knew him through his writings. In the formal division of labor Ronald Morse prepared translations of the Introduction; Noburu Hiraga of chapters I, II, VI, and VII; Stephen Vlastos, chapter III; Eiji Yutani, chapters IV and V; and Carol Gluck, chapter VIII. This began the process, but the end product was still several years away. There were problems of unifying the whole with regard to usage and style, and of adding footnotes of explanation and identification to the sketchy leads the author felt it necessary to provide for his Japanese readers. In these, and throughout the texts, names have been given in the Japanese order, with surname first. In going through the entire manuscript Bob Tadashi Wakabayashi of Princeton performed yeoman service; he, Michael P. Birt, David S. Noble, and Constantine Vaporis of Princeton caught further problems in the course ofprocessing the text on the computer, as did Thomas Schalowand David Howell in preparing the index. I thank my colleagues for their patience in waiting to see the product of their work and am greatly saddened that Noburu Hiraga, who translated [our of the book's eight chapters, died just as it went to press. We are grateful, too, [or the enthusiastic support of Miriam Brokaw and her associates at Princeton University Press, and we are pleased that this work of contemporary historical writing has found its place in the Princeton Library of Asian Translations. All of us are grateful to Irokawa Daikichi [or his tolerance and encouragement during the decade that has passed. We feel with him that the book shows a side of Meiji Japan that has not been apparent to those whose reading has been limited to the usual sources; its judgments afford a perspective on contemporary Japan that would surely have surprised the citizens of Meiji Japan a century ago
