Kaolinite is the dominant mineral present in these Georgia and SouthCarolina kaolins, generally comprising more than 90% of the mineralcontent (Murray, 1976). Other accessory minerals that are commonlypresent include quartz, muscovite, biotite, partially altered feldspar, andsmectite along with minor amounts of halloysite, magnetite, ilmenite,rutile, anatase, zircon, tourmaline, and a few other heavy minerals previouslyenumerated in Chapter 1. The current annual production is about7,400,000 tons as estimated by the US Geological Survey (Virta, 2004).
