Environment Canada has issued freezing rain and snowfall warnings for parts of the GTA with spring barely a day old.
“It may be the first full day of spring, but it’s no surprise that Mother Nature is still in a wintery mood,” the agency said in a statement on Friday.
It said the freezing rain will start soon after midnight in the Toronto area following a brief period of heavy snow. Hamilton, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Pickering, Oshawa, southern Durham and the regions of Halton and Peel will all be affected.
Although the freezing rain won’t last long, the ice buildup will make for slippery roads.
Some power outages are possible, but aren’t likely to be widespread.
Environment Canada said around the same time, heavy snow would start in Newmarket, Uxbridge, the northern parts of York and Durham Regions and Barrie.
The snow will come down at a rate of more than three centimetres per hour and visibility could be 200 metres or less right into Saturday morning.
It’s expected the areas under the snowfall warning will get more than 15 centimetres.
