Arsenic. Drinking water is at risk for contamination by arsenic from the leaching ofinorganic arsenic compounds formerly used in pesticide sprays, from the combustionof arsenic-containing fossil fuels, and from the leaching of mine tailingsand smelter runoff. Chronic high-level exposures can cause abnormal skin pigmentation,hyperkeratosis, nasal congestion, and abdominal pain. At lower levelsof chronic exposure, cancer is the major concern.
