Blocking Foehn: Moist lower-level air
is blocked by a mountain barrier. Drier
upper-level air then flows down to replace
it in the lee of the mountains. As the drier
air from above descends it is warmed by
compression. See figure 3. It is typical for
this type of foehn to occur in association
with a vertically propagating lee mountain
wave.
