In the pinch mode (Figure 2.8d), as for the valve mode, the MR-fluid flows through a channel. But, here, the external magnetic field is applied more or less parallel to the flow directionby arranging the poles axially along the flow path and separating them by a non-magneticspacer. On the contrary to all previous operating modes, such configuration leads to a highlynon-uniform magnetic field inside the MR-fluid. The main idea is rather than solidifyingthe fluid throughout the valve (as in the valve mode), the MR-fluid is solidified by the themagnetic field only near the walls, changing in that way the effective orifice diameter throughwhich the fluid flows (Goncalves and Carlson, 2008).
