Từ năm 1975, khi đất nước thống nhất, và đặc biệt từ quá trình “Đổi Mới” năm 1986, cùng với sự phát triển của nền kinh tế nhiều thành phần và thi hành một chính sách mở, phong trào tình nguyện đã phát triển rộng lớn về cả cơ cấu tổ chức và cách vận hành. Kết quả là, nhiều người đã rất hào hứng tham gia. Phong trào đã đa dạng hóa mọi khía cạnh của đời sống kinh tế và xã hội và tập trung vào các vấn đề quan tọng như tháo gỡ bom và mìn, cải tạo đất, phát triển các vùng kinh tế mới, tái trồng rừng, bảo vệ môi trường, xóa đói giảm nghèo, phát triển kinh tế và văn hóa ở các vùng sâu vùng xa miền núi, xóa nạn mù chữ, và giúp đỡ những người khuyết tật và trẻ mồ côi.

Trong quý 4, phường 17 quận Bình Thạnh, thành phố Hồ Chí Minh, các tổ chức xã hội và chính quyền địa phương đã phát triển một sáng kiến nhằm kêu gọi một hoặc 2 hộ gia đình khá giả giúp đỡ một gia đình nghèo. Trong 5 năm qua, những hộ gia đình khá giả này đã cung cấp cho vay vốn không lãi suất trị giá lên tới hàng trăm triệu đồng cho các hộ nghèo. Một số gia đình khá giả thậm chí còn cho phép những gia đình hàng xóm nghèo hơn sử dụng nhà của họ để kinh doanh và sản xuất. Kết quả là, tất cả các hộ gia đình nghèo ở quý này đã trở nên tốt hơn.

Thanh niên vẫn là lực lượng hoạt dộng chính của phong trào tình nguyện. Có rất nhiều dẫn chứng cho việc này, ví dụ như “Làng thanh niên Kiên Chính”. Kiên Chính là một vùng theo đạo Thiên Chúa thuộc huyện Hải Hậu, tỉnh Nam Định. Liên hiệp thanh niên địa phương đã lựa chọn ra một số tình nguyện viên giỏi và gửi họ tham gia các khóa học đào tạo về quản lý và các kĩ thuật canh tác cho việc phát triển nghề nuôi trồng thủy sản. Những tình nguyện viên này sau đó trở thành các giảng viên cho các Đoàn viên thanh niên khác và cho gia đình của họ. Sau 2 năm, “Làng thanh niên Kiên Chính” đã thành lập một đội tàu đánh bắt cá ngoài khơi rất sinh lợi và 2 vùng nuôi đánh bắt tôm.

Phong trào tinh nguyện giúp đỡ trẻ em có hoàn cảnh khó khăn trong những năm gần đây đã phát triển rộng rãi khắp cả nước. Ở tất cả 64 tỉnh và thành phố đều có những cơ sở để giúp đỡ và nuôi dưỡng trẻ em có hoàn cảnh khó khăn. Chỉ tính riêng Hà Nội, cuối năm 2000, đã có khoảng 5547 tình nguyện viên bao gồm các cán bộ công chức, các doanh nghiệp, tu sĩ và linh mục, các thợ thủ công, người buôn bán nhỏ, và các sinh viên tham gia vào công việc này. Gần 35,000 trẻ em có hoàn cảnh khó khăn được trợ cấp trong cùng năm. Đã có rất nhiều ví dụ điển hình như nhà tu sĩ cao cấp Dam Binh trong nhiều năm đã trợ cấp hàng trăm triệu đồng cho 30 trẻ em, và cung cấp tiền trợ cấp cho trường trẻ em khiếm thính Xã Đàn. Ộng Vũ Tiến sống trên đường Trần Quốc Toản đã thành lập ra “ Thành Lập Xa Me” để thu nhận hàng trăm trẻ em đường phố để dạy chúng cách bán báo, cung cấp cho chúng nơi ăn chốn ở và đào tạo hướng nghiệp. Ngày nay ở Hà Nội, có khoảng 35 trung tâm giáo dục thường xuyên, 47 “lớp học linh hoạt”, và 50 lớp học tình thương với gần 1000 trẻ em đường phố và trẻ em khuyết tật được chăm sóc bởi những người thầy tình nguyện. Tại thành phố Hồ Chí Minh, bà Huỳnh Tiểu Hương, người đã trải qua một tuổi thơ đầy khó khăn nay đã trở thành một nữ doanh nhân thành đạt với nỗ lực lớn, trong nhiều năm đã dành nhiều thời gian và bỏ ra hàng tỉ đồng để giúp đỡ trẻ emcó hoàn cảnh khó khăn. Nhờ có sự giúp đỡ của bà, hàng trăm trẻ em đường phố đã trưởng thành, tìm được việc làm ổn định và một số được nhận vào được các trường đại học.
Một thế mạnh của phong trào tình nguyện Việt Nam kể từ năm 1990 đó là sự tham gia tích cực của nhiều tổ chức tình nguyện quốc tế. Ngoài các hoạt đọng từ thiện, các tổ chức này còn tích cực tham gia vào công việc phát triển cộng đồng, xây dựng năng lực và xóa đói giảm nghèo cho các cộng đồng có hoàn cảnh khó khăn.

Từ đầu những năm 1990, tình nguyện viên Liên Hiệp Quốc (UNV) đã có văn phòng đại diện ở Việt Nam. Hiện tại, số lượng tình nguyện viên Liên Hiệp Quốc đã tăng gấp 3 lần so với trước đây. Số lượng tình nguyện viên quốc gia cũng tăng đáng kể, chiếm khoản 50% tổng số tình nguyện viên. Các tình nguyện viên Liên Hiệp Quốc làm việc ở nhiều lĩnh vực và luôn sẵn sàng làm việc ở các vùng xa xôi để sẻ chia đắng cay ngọt bùi với người dân địa phương, và cung cấp cho họ kinh nghiệm cũng như kiến thức, góp phần cho sự phát triển kinh tế-xã hội ở Việt Nam.

Nhiều tổ chức tình nguyện khác cũng gửi đi hàng trăm tình nguyện viên giỏi và nhiệt huyết tới Việt Nam. Cơ quan hợp tác quốc tế Nhật Bản đã tài trợ tình nguyện hợp tác ở nước ngoài Nhật Bản (JOCV) tại Việt Nam từ năm 1994. Cho đến nay, JOCV đã tham gia vào một số dự án phát triển kinh tế-xã hội.
