Fertilizer innovation1,2, F. DEGRYSE Many would argue that innovation in fertilizertechnology is lacking, with no major breakthroughsmadeinthelast4decades.Whileitiscertainlytruethatweknowmuchaboutcropnutritionand that no new “wonder” plant nutrientremainsto be discovered, there has still beenmuchprogressindevelopingfertilizerformulationsmoretailoredtocropdemand,ordesignedtoenhanceefficiencyandreducewastefuloff-sitelossestotheenvironment.Fertilizersareincreasinglybecoming more multinutrient in character, andthe ability to bundle certain micronutrientswithmacronutrientscreatesnewchallengesthatonlya fundamental understandingof fertilizer andsoilchemistry can solve. Similarly the addition ofspecificchemicals to granular or fluid fertilizersdesigned to slow release of nutrients, or to alternutrienttransformations insoil, arebecomingmorecommonplace. However, itisimportantthatthefulllifecycleintheenviornmentandfateinthefoodchain of these new chemicals is well understoodbefore commercial release.
