Contrary to the U.S. evidence, we find that the Canadian MNCs display about three percentage points higher long-term debt
ratio but similar short-term ratios compared to the domestic firms, after controlling for industry and firm characteristics. This
higher leverage of the Canadian MNCs stems largely from their U.S. operations; the expansion in the non-U.S. markets has little
impact on leverage. We find that both the agency costs of debt and business risk increase as Canadian MNCs expand their
operations in non-U.S. countries but the impact of agency costs of debt is stronger. We also show that Canadian firms with access to
global bond market have about six percentage points higher leverage than firms with no access. The comparison with an industryand size-matched U.S. sample shows that the sensitivity of leverage to the firm-specific factors also differs between the two
country samples.
