HEART ATTACK- MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION.Myocardial Infarction.A heart attack is a general term to describe sudden damage to the heart. There are many medical reasons why people have heart attack, but they all have the same results – a disease in the blood supply to the heart. This eventually leads to heart muscle damage and possibly permanent tissue death. This condition, the death of heart tissue due to loss of blood supply, is called a myocardial infarction. The word “ infarct” means the death of tissue due to the lack of blood. The word “ myocardial” refers to heart muscle. So a myocardial infarction or MI is really the death of part of the heart due to a blockage in the blood vessel. If the blood vessel involved is a small one and only a small amount of heart muscle is affected, this is called a “minor heart attack”. If the blood vessel involved is a large one and a large portion of the injured heart is damaged, it is called a “ massive heart attack”. The ultimate recovery of the injury heart depends on many things – the location of the MI, age, sex, atherosclerosis, heath history of the individual.Arteriosclerosis Arteriosclerosis is hardening of the arteries, and leads to a decrease in the blood supply to body tissue due to thickening of vessel walls. Arteriosclerosis is a form of Arteriosclerosis that takes place in several well – defined steps: - A fatty streak develops in the vessel.- A fibrous plaque develops on top of this. Depending on the size of this plaque, the vessel remains open or becomes completely obstructed.- Sometimes a clot develops here, too.It is important to note if Arteriosclerosis is discovered and treated after the first stage, the condision is reversible. However, once a vessle is completely blocked, it usually remains that way. After a heart attack, many people become “ cardiac cripples”. They are so afraid of another heart attack that they do not exert themselves at all or take any part in their care. They even remove themselves from family relationships. Everything, they do is to blame on their heart attack and their fear of another one. The opposite of this is a total disregard for one’s condition. The patient denies disability. He doesn’t follow any suggestions from his physician, doesn’t take his medication or adhere to his diet.
