Some massi anorthosites, such as those in Nain and Michiga­
mau, Labrador, show gravity layerig but in most complexes gravity
layeri is generally poorly developed or absent. Ages determned to
date on all massi anorthosites are Precambrin, about 1300 ± 200
m.y. (Herz, 1969). These rocks crytallized under slow coolin condi­
tions in the upper mantle or lower crut; the resulting megacrysts are
commonly tens ofcentimeters in lengh. The feldspars are andesine, in
places antiperthitic, or labradorie; pyroxenes are the most common
accessory mineras, but olivine may be present, as it is in the Laramie
anorthosite of Wyoming. Some of the minerals show kink banding, and
plagioclase twin lamellae may be bent or broken.
