SECTION INTRODUCTION
One of the system administrator’s main tasks is to manage software licenses. This involves the understanding and recording of the type of software used by each user at any particular time (a natural flow on from permissions and system access). The system administrator much also record who the software vendors are, what type of software licenses apply to which software, what versions are being used, when the licenses expire, and what the costs are. The system administrator may also have the responsibility of enforcing licensing terms and conditions.
Although traditional models of software licensing have evolved over time, they do not fully satisfy the business issues faced by today’s organisations. Many new types of software licenses with far more user time, and cost flexibility, are coming on the market.
Detailed analysis of actual software usage, using license tracking tools is not only necessary for cost control and efficiency reasons but also assists in tailoring license types to actual usage profiles. The system administrator is often the person who gathers the statistics of license usage that are vital in managing existing licenses and planning for new ones.
