Hanoi, July 20, 2007 – A workshop to introduce international experiences in the institutional arrangements for traffic safety and discuss their applications into the Vietnamese context was held in Hanoi yesterday, July 19th.
The workshop, under the theme “New Approaches to Institutional Arrangements and Management of Traffic Safety”, was organized by the Vietnam Road Safety Project, a US$31.7 million project implemented by the National Traffic Safety Committee with financial support from the World Bank.
At the workshop, Vice Minister of Transport, Mr. Nguyen Hong Truong briefed the participants of latest developments in Vietnam’s efforts to ensure traffic safety, and welcomed the World Bank in providing international experience and practices to help Vietnam in this area.
“Our workshop today will focus mainly on the means for achieving better road safety results at a national level.” said Mr. William D.O. Paterson, acting Country Director for the World Bank in Vietnam.
The conference delegates also discussed ways to make road travel in Vietnam safe, and “how to improve institutional arrangements and interventions to achieve the results defined in the National Traffic Safety Strategy” according to Mr. Paterson.
Other themes discussed at the workshop include how to develop an appropriate road safety strategy, and how to produce safe roads. A new international Road Assessment Program (iRAP) was described as a means for rating the safety of national roads to assist in prioritizing investments to raise the safety levels. Delegates discussed the application of such international experiences and practices in Vietnam.
