Extending Your Range - The BasicSaturday, August 30, 2014 Filed in: Voice ExercisesIs this top of your list? Those high songs really get you right? It’s easily the most common request in singing lessons, but how do you actually extend your range? Let’s delve…“I’ve got what I’ve what got”This is a popular misconception. There are so many singers out there who have given in to the fact that they will never be able to sing higher. That they are a bass, and that’s about the long and short of it.The reality is that anyone can sing the notes. Anyone can work at it and be successful. Admittedly some singers, like basses, may have a harder job getting there than a tenor. Blame your parents for that one. But it’s all doable with the right guidance.1. Start at the topIt’s good to start at the top, weirdly. For extending the range, we often want to build on the destination first ie the head voice. This means getting up into the upper part of the voice with that ‘hoot’ sound and becoming familiar with it. For most people who have a problem with range, they tend to avoid the high part of the voice. They become understandably frustrated with it because it doesn’t cooperate! But if you try a hooted sound like woof or wee to get yourself into the top quickly and easily. The sounds you use will differ from person to person. A coach can help you pick something effective.
