This study assesses the willingness of people in Ho Chi MinhCity, Vietnam, to pay for improvement in their water supply system. It also investigates what aspects of water supply, such as quality andwater pressure, are the most important. The study was carried outin response to the growing number of water supply problems in thecity. It was also done to highlight the need for consumer demands tobe given priority in water supply planning. Many of the householdssurveyed already had to do a lot as well as spend a lot of money tocope with the current unreliable, poor quality public water supply. Thestudy found that people were willing to pay between 148,000 VND and175,000 VND on average for improvements in their water supply, thathouseholds without piped water were more willing to pay for improvedservices than those already enjoying a fixed supply, and that ‘non-piped’ households placed more importance on water quality than waterpressure (if they were to be connected to a fixed water supply).
