Commercial documentary credits are intended to serve as a means of payment for the delivery of goods or the provision of services or performance. As discussed in Chapter 1, to aid their development, in 1933 ICC published its first version of a set of international standards- the Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits (UCP). The current version, UCP 600, came into effect on 1 July 2007. The UCP enjoys global acceptance and, today, probably all documentary credits are issued subject to it.The impact of the 39 articles of UCP 600 on documentary credit parties and operations is covered throughout this study text, and they are analysed in detail in Chapter 1 2.A commercial documentary credit is used as the principal payment mechanism if performance of the contract has occurred. In contrast, a standby letter of credit is typically used as a contingency payment mechanism, which can be triggered if there has been some aspect of non-performance or default.
