3. Methodology and sample selection
Based on an IASC list of companies “referring to the use of IAS,” Street and Gray (2001) identified a global sample of 279 companies referring to the use of IAS in 1998 that provide English language financial statements.3 Starting with these companies, 21 were excluded from the current study because they dropped their reference to IAS in 1999, and two were excluded because they merged with another company and were not in existence in1999(seeTable1). The authors wrote and/ore-mailed the remaining 256 companies and requested an English language annual report for 1998 and 1999. Mailing addresses were obtained from the Dow Jones Data Base and e-mail addresses were obtained via various web search engines. For any company not respondingtotheserequests,aneffortwasmadetoobtainthe1998and1999annualreportfrom either the company’s web site or other web sites such as annualreport.com.hk or irasia.com and Lexis-Nexis. This procedure resulted in the collection of a set of 1998 and 1999 English language annual reports for 210 companies.
