KnowledgeThe Eastern Arc forests are among the most important priorities for biodiversity conservation in Africa, with exceptional levels of floral and faunal richness and endemism (Burgess et al1998; Lovett 1998; Newmark 2002). Their eastern slopes intercept clouds arriving from the Indian Ocean, with the run-off from the forests providing the principal water supply to major coastal settlements, including Dar es Salaam (where 3–4 million people and most of Tanzania’s industry is located). This water catchment function was the main reason for the establishment of the area’s forest reserves by colonial authorities.
