DOUBLE-DECKER BUSESPeople think that double-decker buses can only be found in Britain, but in fact, for many years now, they have been used in cities around the world. The first double-deckers were nothing like the modern ones. They were pulled by horses, and still had no roof. Originally built to carry visitors to the Great Exhibition of 1851, they were then used on a regular basis to take Londoners to the areas where they worked. They preferred the lower deck, which had heating and comfortable seats. On the other hand visitors to London preferred the top deck, where they had the chance to see the sights better. Of course, if there was a sudden shower, they ran the risk of getting soaked ! Double-deckers now have roofs, and are still the best way to see London. But if you have an appointment, don't assume that the bus will get you there on time. It could well get caught up in one of London's terrible traffic jams.
