When summer comes is a short meaningful story written by Helen Naylor with an expressive writing style. This story takes place in Polreath and it shows a complicated between Anna Martins, Stephen Martins and Tristan Goddard. A ten-year married couple - Stephen and Anna - who live in London and have a plan to escape from stress of work as well as from the hit of capital city in the summer. After all, they decide to go to Polreath. There, they rented a house called Dolphin Cottage, which is belonged to Tristan, a local person. At their first meeting, Anna and Tristan had a sight impression for each other’s attractiveness. They do something that they shouldn’t do, and of course Stephen could never know. On the contrary to the crowded city life, life in Polreath is so peaceful that makes the Stephen think about living there, in the Dolphin Cottage forever. Then, Anna headed back to London, she couldn’t stop thinking about all the wrong things and start to feel guilty that she decided to stop Stephen’s moving idea. In the end, at the very early hour, Stephen calls Anna and says he wants to talk.
Helen Neylor left the readers whith an opening which would depend mainly on our own imagination. In our subjective thinking, it is a really perfect ending for them three. It makes readers think of many cases about the conversation between Stephen and Tristan, or about the reason why Stephen calls Anna so early and why they cannot talk on the phone. Those things make the ending seems to be unchangeable. Despite the impeccable ending, chapter 14 is not quite good. Helen Naylor might let her character’s relationship goes too far. Anna and Tristan can love each other, but they have someone else in their heart. We think as if we can change the Anna’s last trip to be Last trip of three. Although that is not suitable for our all, Helen Naylor has her own thinking when she writes it. It might not become the meaningful story without that chapter, and we might not learn from this story any faithfulness. In life, husband and wife have to respect and to be honest with each other. Perhaps there are some problems sometimes happen in life, which make husband or wife feel uncomfortable, so sincere sharing is the best way to solve instead of keeping silent. Moreover, when you are married, you have to care about people around you, and don't lose your loyalty and wife responsibilities to your marriage even when you are alone with someone else or may be attracted. And especially, don’t squeeze into any other relations, which is going happiness.
In conclusion, the story is not really excellent and interesting, but somehow it has left us a lot of different feelings for us to think deeper about love life.
