An Residential Gateway (RG) sits between the IP broadband access network and the in-house network to allow multiple digital devices in a home to share a single IP connection. In addition to high speed Internet access applications, RGs are also capable of intelligently routing IPTV services to specific digital televisions, flat panel display, and mobile devices. (see Fig. 5.1).
Given the fast-changing nature of the IPTV industry, it is helpful to examine the
different generations of residential gateways that have been deployed over the past number of years.
Even though the term “residential gateway” is a relatively new one to most people, RG devices already exist in many households around the world. For example, most households already own or lease a couple of first generation
