There are various operational problems encountered during theoperation of gas engines at the energy recovery facility. The LFGhas lower methane content (about 40%) in comparison to naturalgas (about 95% methane). In addition LFG contains acidic gasessuch H2S, volatile halogenated hydrocarbons (VHHs) as well asorganometallic compounds which affect engine performance. Deposit formation is the most significant concern during the energyrecovery from the LFG. At the Odayeri energy production facility, deposit formation was seen in the combustion chamber, turbocharger, and intercooler of the engine before the scheduled maintenance times. The increased maintenance costs and loss ofproduction during engine repairs increase the operating cost ofthe energy recovery process. Acidic compounds in the gas reducethe life of engine oil by lowering lower of total base number(TBN) and initial pH values. Accumulation of the acidic compoundsin the engine oil cause corrosion of engine parts.
