2020-How Technology will rule our livesWhen Thomas Watson, the founder of IDM,was asked in 1043 how he viewed the future of technology ,he famously replied that one day there might be a worldwide market'for maybe five compute'. H G Wells,on the other hand, predicted in 1901 that the public transport of the future would probably consist of a system of moving walkways, where people would step from walkway to get to their destination.Neither of these technological predictions has been very accurate,so what do we think will really change/The answer is probably not that we will have lots of new inventions, but that information technology will transform our day-to-day lives. The big trend that is going to change things is the way we transmit information. In other words, by 2020 everything large enough to carry a microchip will probly have one,and from these the possibilities are endless. We could have fridges that can read the use-by date on the milk and order more when you need it.WE could be sent gas bills that include an electronic reminder to pay them.We could wash our clothes in washing machines that contact service engineers when there is a problem. The machine would then automatically arrange a time for the engineer to come after finding a free day in your electronic diary.Even bricks could be fitted with electronic identifiers so that when an architect walks round a half-finished school or hopital an image of the building appears automatically on his laptop. We may be use other devices which automatically change your mobile phone to different setting, depending on whether you are in your work or casual clothing in the middle of business.Doe this all sound a bit frightening?Well.don't worry.Just remember that even H>GWell got the future wrong.in the future more objects will probably carry microchipswe might find microchips in the walls of buildingfridges will order your milkit is possible that the washing machine will fix itself
