oil and gas production have been a mainstay of Malaysia’s growth since oil was first drilled in 1910 in Sarawak. The founding of PETRONAS in 1974 provided vital impetus to the development of oil and gas resources in Malaysia. In parallel, the consumption of electricity has grown steadilyto 110 gigawatt hours, putting Malaysia on par with Thailand in terms of electricity usage per capita, driven by increased levels of prosperity and the industrialisation of the nation. The combined oil, gas and energy sectors represented RM127 billion or 19 percent of GDP in 2009, as shown in Exhibit 6-1.
