Additionally, the Bureau of Reclamation, which had begun a series of west-ern U.S. irrigation projects in the early twentieth century, was now con-structing large hydroelectric projects such as the Hoover Dam. The HooverDam on the Colorado River was completed in 1936 to provide flod controland electric power. Lake Mead, behind the dam, provides irrigation water toboth the United States and Mexico. The dam is 726 ft high, 660 ft wide at thebottom, and 45 ft wide at the top and generates 1,345 MW. The Hoover Damwas surpassed by the 6,809 MW Grand Coulee Dam in 1942. The Itaipu Damopened in 1984 in South America as the largest dam, producing 14,000 MWbut has also since then been surpassed by other dams.
