Inadequate mold supports—components called "support pillars" are used in mold construction to give extra supportbehind the cavity retainer plates on the ejector half of themold. These pillars keep the mold from collapsing duringinjection. If there are too few pillars, or they are not properlydesigned or located, the mold can deflect when injection pressure is applied. The mold opens slightly, and flash occurs. Theuse of fewer large-diameter pillars instead of more small-diameter supports is preferred, because the latter can press into thesupport plates.
