The white-clawed crayfish has suffered substantial declines in populations over the past century,attributable to water pollution, habitat destruction, disease and competition. Crayfish ‘plague’ isa key threat to the white-clawed crayfish. Although non-native crayfish, which act as vectors ofthe disease are considered absent from Ireland, outbreaks have occurred which are thought tohave drastically reduced populations of white-clawed crayfish in some catchments.
